FFCUL

FFCUL is a foundation of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL) that manages the majority of research units that operate within FCUL. FCUL is the leading academic institution in Science in Portugal. It is organised into 9 Departments that, together, employ circa 500 teaching staff in different fields: Chemistry and Biochemistry; Education; Geology; Informatics; Mathematics; Physics; Plant Biology; Statistics and Operations Research; Zoology and Anthropology. It offers 25 undergraduate programmes attended by circa 6000 students and about 20 MSc programmes attended by circa 400 students. The number of PhD students is in excess of 300. With more than two hundred on-going projects, research activities at FCUL are carried out both within its Departments and at 31 Laboratories and Research Centres or Institutes embracing a variety of domains in Science and Technology.

FFCUL participates in AGILE via the Laboratory for Computational Models and Architectures (LabMAC), a research unit created in 1998 by members of the Department of Informatics. LabMAC itself is structured in terms of three research sub-units: one in Subsymbolic Computation, another in Agent Modelling, and a third in Interaction and Mobility in Software Systems. It is this third sub-unit that participates in AGILE.

LabMAC has accumulated specific expertise in the categorical foundations of system specification, namely in object-oriented and component-based frameworks, with a more recent focus on Software Architectures, as well as process calculi for concurrent and mobile systems. Its members have participated in several research initiatives both at national and European level, including the working groups IS-CORE and MODELAGE, the BRA COORDINATION, the HCM Scientific Network MEDICIS, the Network of Excellence RENOIR, and the TMR Research Network LINEAR.
